too much information…

Over the past two years I have read a hundred different opinions about what foods we should eat and when we should eat it. In addition, TV Chefs, “Foodie” magazines, social media sites and food marketing campaigns have conspired to turn every meal into a gastronomic event and undermine the confidence of every home cook to provide something nutritious that their kids will actually eat. The notion that we eat to fuel our bodies has been totally lost and we are now bringing up a generation obsessed with sugar and junk foods.

For me I prefer a low-carb diet as I like the strict boundaries it imposes and the effect it has on my weight, mood, skin etc. but I realise that this is hard for most people. However, I do believe that eating well is simple and my conclusion is that we must go back to preparing “proper” food again and re-aquainting ouselves and our children with the skills required to prepare meats, vegetables, pulses etc. Here are my guidelines to achieving this:

  1. FORGET EVERYTHING THAT YOU HAVE EVER HEARD ABOUT HEALTHY EATING.

  2. DON’T STRESS - KEEP IT SIMPLE.

  3. CHOOSE THE BEST INGREDIENTS THAT YOUR BUDGET WILL ALLOW.

  4. ONLY BUY “REAL” FOOD.

  5. EMBRACE FATS. DON’T BE AFRAID OF WHOLE MILK OR BUTTER.

  6. KEEP CARB PORTIONS TO A SENSIBLE SIZE.

  7. DON’T OBSESS ABOUT MICRO-NUTRIENTS.

  8. ENJOY SHARING DELICIOUS MEALS WITH PEOPLE YOU LOVE.

I know we are all incredibly busy and this may seem idealistic but food is the most important thing and once you have a bank of 12 go-to recipes that everyone will eat you are home and dry. We owe it to ourselves, our families and our NHS.
