Over the last 2 years I have read hundreds of articles and books about food, nutrition and exercise. The health of the nation is of the greatest importance and I don’t know about you but I consider what we eat to be pretty fundamental to life. There is a huge amount of space given up to the debate about meat which while important won’t solve global warming or the global crisis of obesity and diabetes. There are equally large amounts of column inches devoted to micronutrients which you wouldn’t have to worry about if you simply ate a sensible diet. and to be quite honest it’s utterly baffling. but the “experts” seem unable to come up with a sensible plan to tackle, what is an absolute crisis. So I have decided to try and evaluate the information, draw up my own opinions and in this way raise a small amount of awareness to the problem and hopefully help you navigate your way through the mire of information. So this is where I am at:

  1. There is a global epidemic of obesity and diabetes.

  2. The high level of carbohydrate consumption is the main cause of obesity and diabetes through their effect on blood glucose and sebsequent insulin levels.

  3. Refined carbohydrates are more damaging than complex ones but all contribute.

  4. Despite the exponential rise in obesity and diabetes over the last 40 years the UK government has not changed its recommendation to base every meal on starchy carbohydrates.

  5. The interests of the food industry are over-represented on panels advising the UK government on nutrition. This may be why the advice doesn’t change.

  6. The scientific community is stifled in its ability to produce impartial research due to its reliance on the food industry for funding.

  7. TV Shows, “Foodie” magazines, social media sites conspire to turn every meal into a gastronomic event putting a strain on every home cook.

  8. event junk food marketing lures us out of our kitchens.

WE NEED TO RE-EVALUATE THE NUTRITIONAL ADVICE PROVIDED TO US BY OUR GOVERNMENT, PUT CONTROLS ON THE LEVEL OF JUNK FOOD MARKETING THAT OUR CHILDREN ARE EXPOSED TO AND BEGIN RE-EDUCATING OURSELVES IN PREPARING SIMPLE MEALS USING PROPER FOOD.
